A Word from Shia Shabazz Smith

“Dawn” serves as a powerful reflection of the inner dialogues we all grapple with, whether or not they manifest in our daily lives. Through its poignant portrayal of loneliness experienced by its protagonists, the film prompts us to reevaluate what truly gives life meaning and how we understand mortality, both in practical terms and spiritual dimensions. In an era where diagnoses, diversity, and societal expectations often collide, “Dawn” challenges viewers to delve deeply into their own thoughts, fears, and definitions of freedom, inviting a personal exploration of what it means to live authentically and meaningfully.

Logline:

A bereft wine bar steward finds solace in a mysterious nomad with a hidden past, sparking a transformative romance, forcing her to confront her deepest desires and reevaluate her life, love, and future.

More about "Dawn"

SYNOPSIS:

Dawn once had clear ambitions—fresh out of college, she aspired to become a therapist, dedicated to helping others navigate life’s struggles. However, the sudden death of her parents shattered her dreams, leaving her adrift in grief. Now, she leads a quiet, detached life as a steward at Biron Wine Bar, her once vibrant spirit dulled by sorrow.

Enter Kamari, a charismatic nomad. When he is drawn into the bar, his effortless charm intrigues Dawn, though she remains guarded, reluctant to let anyone close. Kamari’s persistence begins to break through her emotional walls, and slowly, Dawn allows herself to feel again. As their connection deepens, she starts to believe that perhaps she can reclaim the life and passion she once had. Kamari offers a glimmer of hope and desire, a chance to rediscover herself beyond the numbness of her grief.

But when Dawn uncovers a shocking secret about Kamari’s past, her newfound sense of hope is thrown into turmoil. His hidden truth forces her to confront her vulnerabilities, questioning whether her feelings for him are genuine or simply a fleeting escape from her pain.

In this moment of reckoning, Dawn must decide if the transformation she’s experienced with Kamari is real and worth fighting for—or if it’s all an illusion that will only leave her heartbroken once again. With her future hanging in the balance, Dawn is faced with the ultimate question: Will she take the risk of embracing life, love, and her true self, or retreat into the safety of her grief?
